In 2018, Denver Water faced a difficult choice to mitigate risks tied to their estimated 64,000-84,000 lead service lines: 1) Take the "standard" route by adding state-mandated orthophosphate by 2020, or 2) Seek a variance to launch a difficult and ambitious proactive Lead Reduction Program ahead of LCRR/LCRI requirements.
Given orthophosphates' potential environmental and health impacts in the region, Denver Water chose the proactive route, successfully obtaining a variance from the EPA to launch a proactive Lead Reduction Program to provide the greatest benefit to the 1.5 million people in its metro area.
Join Denver Water, Corona Environmental Consulting, and Brita as they detail why and how Denver Water ultimately chose to launch its Lead Reduction Program. We will discuss the pros and cons of accelerating lead service line replacement vs. exclusively utilizing corrosion control and share results and lessons learned from Denver's proactive approach.
Attendees will learn the following:
- How a water system can continue to deliver safe drinking water to their residents as lead increasingly becomes top of mind for residents and municipalities dealing with complex and changing regulations.
- The pros and cons based on Denver's experience of exclusively utilizing corrosion control methods vs. accelerating LSL replacement, such as cost and environmental impacts.
- How to think about and design your key program elements within larger lead reduction/LSL replacement programs.
