The standard was first approved May 1923, with the latest revision approved June 1978. ANSI approved it in December 1978. A history of the standard is provided along with information on use of the standard and the major revisions. This standard covers the various classes of cold-water turbine meters in sizes 1 1/2 in. through 12 in. for water works customers, customer service and the materials and workmanship employed in their fabrication. The turbine meters are divided into Class I and Class II type meters. Both classes of meters register by recording the revolutions of a turbine set in motion by the force of flowing water striking the blades. Class I meters are the vertical shaft and low velocity horizontal shaft models formally covered by AWWA C701-70. Class II meters are the in-line horizontal axis, high velocity type turbines characterized by lower head loss and wider normal test flow limits. Included are sections on the following: references, affidavit of compliance, basis for rejection, choice of materials, pressure castings (main castings), register box rings and covers, measuring cages or chambers, measuring turbines, turbine spindles, intermediate gear trains, external fasteners, coupling tailpieces and nuts, companion flanges, general design including size, capacity, length, width, height, pressure requirement, accessibility, registration accuracy, markings, detailed design of main case, external case screws, bolts, nuts, and washers, main case connections, companion flanges, registers, register boxes, intermediate gear trains, measuring chambers or cages, strainers and seal wire holes. The appendix contains information on units of measurement, register types, tests, testing equipment, registration accuracy, periodic tests, and meter storage.
