The standard was first approved May 1923, with the latest revision approved June 1978. ANSI approved it in December 1978. A history of the standard is provided along with information on use of the standard and the major revisions. This standard covers the various classes of cold-water turbine meters in sizes 1 1/2 in. through 12 in. for water works customers, customer service and the materials and workmanship employed in their fabrication. The turbine meters are divided into Class I and Class II type meters. Both classes of meters register by recording the revolutions of a turbine set in motion by the force of flowing water striking the blades. Class I meters are the vertical shaft and low velocity horizontal shaft models formally covered by AWWA C701-70. Class II meters are the in-line horizontal axis, high velocity type turbines characterized by lower head loss and wider normal test flow limits.
