This standard provides the field installation guidelines for buried steel water
pipe, 4 in. (100 mm) and larger.
The information contained in this standard is intended to be used as a guide
to assist in the installation of steel water pipe. Major revisions made to the standard in this edition include the following:
the format has been changed to AWWA standard style;
added Standards Council materials language as new (Sec. 4.2);
revision of trench widths (Sec. 4.4.2.3);
revision of rock conditions (Sec. 4.4.2.6);
the section on unsuitable subgrade material was revised (Sec. 4.4.2.10);
an additional paragraph was added on pipe installation (Sec. 4.4.3);
a section on pipe on steep grades was added (Sec. 4.4.3.6);
revisions were made to the section on pipe placement for rubber-gasketed
joints (Sec. 4.4.4.1.1);
revisions were made to the section on pipe placement for welded lap joints
(Sec. 4.4.4.2);
an additional paragraph was added regarding the weld-after-backfill method
(Sec. 4.4.4.2);
the procedure for flanged joints was revised (Sec. 4.4.4.4.);
a new Figure 5 was added for bolt torque sequence;
revisions were made to the welded joints section (Sec. 4.4.4.9);
additional information was added on heat-shrink sleeve installation (Sec. 4.4.4.13.3);
additional information was added regarding cement mortar for field joints
and repairs (Sec. 4.4.4.13.4);
Sec. 4.4.5, Fitting installation, was deleted;
revisions were made to the section on backfilling (Sec. 4.4.6);
Figure 5, Pipe bedding, was replaced with new Figure 6, Trench cross section;
a new Table 1 on soil stiffness categories was added;
revisions were made to test restrictions (Sec. 5.2.1); and,
a new section on affidavit of compliance was added (Sec. 6.2).
